We departed RBYC at 4.30am in calm conditions and motored
sailed down the Bay. Crossing Port
Philip Heads (or the rip) was pretty uneventful, which is exactly how we like
it and Bass Strait welcomed us with a rolling swell of 1-2 metres. Chloe wasn’t feeling too well at this stage
but came good pretty quickly after a few salty crackers.
The wind direction was S.E., which meant head winds, but as
it was light around 10-15 knots it was still relatively comfortable
sailing. The wind picked up
mid-afternoon to 20 knots which produced a short sharp chop from the S.E. mixed
with a rolling swell from the S.W. – not fun!
This lasted about 7 hours.
The kids ended up falling asleep in the cockpit as they did
not feel well when they went below in the cabin. But we were able to transfer
them into their beds. I only heard ‘I want to go
home’ once from the kids (not sure how many times I said it). We were very
proud of them as it was not a comfortable sail and probably not the
introduction we wanted to give them to the trip!
We anchored in Oberon Bay at 4am Tuesday morning.
Still in Port Phillip Bay - hence the smiles. |
Lucky we brought the monkey bars with us! |
